Day 12: Plitvice
Plitvice Lakes was a place we had never heard of before this tour, but we were awestruck once we started exploring it. Plitvice is made up of 16 lakes and countless waterfalls that help to connect them all. Katka explained that we would start at the upper lakes and end at the lower lakes. (Basically working backwards to the entrance) We didn't really have a preference, but it was great advice! We had the upper lakes almost completely to ourselves and were not rushed in any way. This is a Chemist's dream. The science behind the clarity of the water is fascinating and makes you realize that Mother Nature really does know what she is doing.
Plitvice was a nature lovers dream! Once we walked the park, we hopped back on the bus and headed to our vacation from vacation, Rovinj. While we were on the bus, Katka gave us insight into the complications of the former Yugoslavia and how they are trying to all coexist today. This topic is very very complicated and is told differently by everyone, she said. One of our tour members recommended watching Death of Yugoslovia on YOUTUBE. This is a 6 part series done by the BBC that discusses the fall of Yugoslavia. Since we were too young to remember this time in history, the documentary really helped explain a few things, but unfortunately we watched it once we got home. It would have been nice to watch it before going!
When we arrived in Rovinj, I almost thought we were at the wrong hotel. We boarded our own boat that took us to the island that our hotel was on...this place was gorgeous! Our hotel was a RESORT!!!! Now we have only been on two Rick Steves tours, but I would argue that this is the most "resort like" hotel on any tour. There were swimming pools, beaches, diving posts and a walking trail around the whole island. This was very much a "vacation from vacation".
We kicked off the evening with a group dinner, buffet style, that was very good!
